Historic Moment for Ethiopia - the Nile Dam!

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam over the Nile river has been the center of many controversial headlines these past couple of months and even years. Ethiopia announced the first stage of filling the dam’s reservoir just last week, following 9 years of construction. When complete, the dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.  The Ethiopian government anticipates this $4.8 billion dollar investment will not only provide electricity to millions of the country’s population but will also be able to export electricity to neighboring countries. Despite the politics surrounding the dam, WEEMA would like to acknowledge this very historic milestone for the nation. Ethiopians took to the streets of Addis this past weekend to celebrate this moment. It is wonderful to see the unified spirit that this dam has brought to the country at a time where the nation faces many divisive challenges.
