Tembaro's first public library provides safe space for students like Tsefab!
Tsefab, now 19 years old, credits his success in his high school career to the resources and space provided by the Degale Library. Degale, the first public library in the entire district of Tembaro was constructed by WEEMA. The district of Tembaro, home to a population of more than 150,000 people, has a high rate of illiteracy. Factors contributing to this include distance from schools and scarcity of public education facilities such as libraries.
Improving access to well-equipped libraries with reference books, internet and other resources has a direct impact on increasing literacy levels. Additionally, creating welcoming spaces for reading and studying helps students pursue their education to higher levels and especially gives female students safe spaces to focus on their studies.
WEEMA first constructed Degale Library in 2014 and has been expanding its resources and accessibility since then. The building includes a reading room, computer lab with internet, and a children’s library. In 2020, we upgraded the entrance so those with mobility issues can easily use the library. We also renovated the computer center and bathroom facilities.
We are thrilled that students like Tsefab are using the resources offered at the library to study and are thriving in school.
