One pair of glasses at a time!

Did you know that 153 million people worldwide live with visual impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors? This cause of blindness can be easily corrected with glasses. When it comes to Ethiopia, refractive errors are also very common. A study conducted in Addis Ababa showed that refractive error was the cause of more than half of all cases of visual impairment.

Now, why is it important to address cases of refractive error? This issue affects people irrespective of age or gender. This means there are millions of children who perform poorly in school or drop out entirely due to their visual impairment. Fortunately, there is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to fix this problem.

This is why our team conducted a school-wide vision screening where we screened over 2,000 students and teachers. 124 of those screened were found to have refractive error and were provided corrective eyeglasses.

An added benefit of this pilot program was that health workers and teachers learned how to perform vision screening.  The newly trained health workers and teachers will be instrumental in expanding the project to eight new schools in 2022. We hope you will join us in these efforts.

This is just one step in the direction of improving the quality of life for many children suffering from a visual impairment that can easily be diagnosed and treated. One pair of glasses is $30 USD.
