The Joys of Sisterhood - WEEMA Women's Self-Help Groups

With the Ethiopian New Year of 2013 underway, what better time to announce our next series for WEEMA Wednesdays: Phenomenal Women of WEEMA’s Self Help Groups!

One of our most robust initiatives under WEEMA’s economic opportunity programs is our Women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs) where we organize and train women on savings, business entrepreneurship and mutual empowerment. We have trained  135 active groups which include 2500 women as members.   Members contribute to a shared savings account which they can borrow from to cover  expenses that range from unexpected costs like medical emergencies and funerals, to start-up capital for starting a business. 

Below is a short video highlighting the work being done through SHGs. In the next couple of weeks, our new series will feature uplifting stories of some of the phenomenal women who’ve defied expectations and changed not just their own but also their family’s lives through their savings. Stay tuned!
