Maternal & Child Health - Lifesaving Difference

Last week’s highlight featured WEEMA’s work with Health Extension Workers (HEWs) to equip them with digital tools so they can better serve their local communities, especially with care for mothers and children. Training HEWs is only one part of WEEMA’s larger commitment to maternal and child health in Kembata-Tembaro Zone. Today, we wanted to share this video to highlight our work in Maternal and Child healthcare.

In rural Kembata, a well-equipped maternity ward makes the difference between life and death for mothers and newborns. The lack of appropriate equipment or delivery rooms often means that pregnant women have to travel long distances for basic services or receive compromised care at the nearest health facility, thereby putting themselves and their unborn child at risk. This is why WEEMA prioritizes supporting health centers in Kembata-Tembaro Zone with equipment, staff training and facility renovations such as installation of running water, solar lights, and basic sanitary tools. Thanks to your support, WEEMA also provided the zone’s four hospitals with critical equipment such as oxygen tanks, infant incubators, ultrasound machines and surgical sets.  Finally, WEEMA also trained the hospital staff on how to use this equipment and provided local health center teams with refresher courses for newborn care (neonatal resuscitation).
