Selamneshe breaks gender stereotypes through her Self Help Group

As we continue to hold Ethiopia in our thoughts, this week’s WEEMA Wednesday is sharing a bit of hope through yet another uplifting story from our Self Help Group (SHG) star women. Here is Selamneshe’s story:

Selamneshe Basore knew she wanted to join one of the SHGs from the start. As soon as she heard about the group, she told her husband about it and tried to explain the benefits. Unfortunately, her husband was very dismissive of the idea and told her not to participate. He told Selamneshe she shouldn’t waste her time in such unnecessary gatherings of women.

However, Selamneshe was keen on being a member so she started going to her SHG in secret. She would hide away a couple of birr whenever she could for her membership dues to the group. Unfortunately, the time came when Selamneshe and her husband weren’t able to pay for their children’s school fees. Her SHG was happy to step in and lend a helping hand. Her husband was shocked to see the group showing up for their family with no questions asked. Afterwards, Selamneshe was also able to get a loan from her SHG to start a business so she can work and pay off her debt. “Since that very moment, my husband now reminds me not to be late to each of my SHG meetings.” she said joyfully recalling her husband’s change of heart.

SHGs help women like Selamneshe break gender roles and fulfill their potential of providing for their families and communities!

Thank you for your continued support!
